Melissa Dell van Harvard University wint dit jaar de John Bates Clark Medal. De American Economic Association reikt de John Bates Clark Medal, die vaak de Baby Nobelprijs wordt genoemd, elk jaar uit aan wie zij de meest invloedrijke economist jonger dan 40 jaar vindt. The Economist noemde haar in 2018 al een van de top acht jonge economisten van het decennium.

Melissa Dell onderzoekt hoe economische ontwikkeling kan worden verklaard door historische instellingen (institutions). Ze heeft ook onderzoek gedaan in het domein van klimaateconomie.

Uit de aankondiging van de American Economic Association:

A central question in history, political economy and economic development is the role that institutions play in the development of different societies. Through her pioneering careful and creative data collection and empirical work, Melissa Dell has advanced our understanding of the role state and other institutions play in the daily lives of and economic outcomes of ordinary people. In doing so she has also given a new energy and direction to the entire field of political economy and development.

In Trafficking Networks and the Mexican Drug War (American Economic Review, 2015), onderzocht Dell de invloed van de Mexicaanse drugoorlog op lokale ontwikkeling.

In haar meest recent gepubliceerde artikel, The Development Effects of the Extractive Colonial Economy: The Dutch Cultivation System in Java (The Review of Economic Studies, 2020, samen met Benjamin Olken), onderzoekt ze de langetermijneffecten van de Nederlandse suikerproductie in Java in de 19de eeuw. Ze komt tot de bevinding dat gebieden in de buurt van de 19de eeuwse suikerfabrieken in Java vandaag meer geindustrialiseerd zijn, betere infrastructuur en onderwijs hebben en rijker zijn dan andere gebieden waar geen suikerproductie plaatsvond.

Het is zeer bemoedigend dat de John Bates Clark Medal naar een economisch historicus gaat.
